Angels are described as winds and flames of fire in Psalms 114:4. They are spirit beings which means they cannot be seen. There are many classes of angels - seraphim, cherubim, ministering spirits, messengers, some different creatures. First, let's take a look at what kind of angel the devil originally was before the fall. Ezekiel 28:16 says he was a guardian cherub who was expelled from God's mount in disgrace.
He therefore belonged to the cherub class of angels. Cherubs were a class that was connected with the glory of God. They were associated with God’s Glory. We read from Ezekiel 1:6 how each of them had four faces and four wings, their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze.
25 A voice came from above the firmament that was over their heads; whenever they stood, they let down their wings.
26 And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it.
27 Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around.
28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.
Ezekiel 1:25-28
We read that there was something like a vault, sparkling like crystal, and awesome spread out above the heads of the living creatures (Ezekiel 1:22). God's glory is shown in the verses above. Cherubs move from place to place according to God's Spirit. Wherever they go, God's glory is evident. These living creatures carry the glory of God. In Ezekiel 10:20 we see that the cherubim are connected with the Glory of God.
God guarded the tree of life with a flaming sword and cherubim after he drove Adam from Eden. God's shekinah glory is represented by the flaming sword. Cherubim were there as well because they represent God's glory.
There are three courts in the temple of God in the Old Testament: the outer courts are called way, the inner courts are called truth, and the inner most holy place is called life. Behind the veil in The holy of holies is the shekinah glory of God but the veil was made with cherubim (Exodus 26:31). Cherubim are connected with the glory of God.
Satan was a cherub. He has a spiritual body, but no physical body since he is a spirit being. We learn from 1 Cor 15:40 that there are heavenly (celestial) bodies and earthly (terrestrial) bodies. It is possible for these spiritual beings to manifest themselves physically. Hebrews 13:2 tells us how some have entertained strangers unaware - not knowing they were angels. Upon meeting an angel in the field, Samson's mother told her husband she had met a man of God rather than an angel of God (Judges 13:6). Upon meeting an angel in the field, Samson's mother told her husband she had met a man of God rather than an angel of God (Judges 13:6). It wasn't until the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the burnt offering that Manoah and his wife realized it was the angel of God.
The angels ate in Lot's house after he saw two men (not knowing they were angels) and welcomed them into his house. As he prepared everything so they could sleep, every male in the city gathered and asked Lot to bring those two new men so they could get to know them intimately. In Jude 1:6, we read about angels who abandoned their proper dwelling place and were dissatisfied with their authority. They left their former glory which means they had a heavenly glorious body which they left. The glory they had left them took on a lesser (earthly) form. When Noah was alive, those angels (sons of God) saw the beautiful daughters of men and took them as wives. It turned out that the children they gave birth to were giants, a different species. God has kept them in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day (Jude 1:6). We see in 1 peter 3:19 that after being made alive, Jesus went and made proclamation to those imprisoned spirits. According to some, Jesus went to hell and preached to the people there. NO NO NO! He declared to those imprisoned spirits that, even though they corrupted the woman's seed, He had come through David's lineage and had won the victory through His finished work. Jesus proclaimed and let them know that He has won the great and matchless victory. Who were those imprisoned spirits? It is clear from verse 20 that those imprisoned spirits were the disobedient in Noah's days while he was building the ark. In Jude 1, it is stated that Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding towns devoted themselves to sexual immorality and perversion. They were after a strange flesh. The children of God should be aware that these spirits work behind Satan's age-old tricks.
